Common Scams Targeting Senior Citizens

  • KYC Update ScamFake calls claiming your bank account will be frozen unless you update KYC by sharing OTP.
  • Digital ArrestCaller pretends to be CBI/Police, claims your Aadhaar is linked to crime, demands money.
  • Pension/Insurance FraudFraudsters pose as government agents offering fake pension upgrades.
  • Grandchild ScamCaller claims to be your grandchild in trouble needing money urgently.
  • Lottery / Prize ScamA message or call saying you won ₹5 lakh. They ask for a small "processing fee" first.
  • Fake Technical SupportSomeone calls saying your computer or phone has a virus and asks to install an app to "fix" it — which steals your data.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call

  • Hang up immediately without pressing any buttons.
  • Call a trusted family member and describe what happened.
  • Call the Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930
  • Do not call back the suspicious number.
  • Never install any app that a stranger on the phone asks you to install.

UPI & Digital Payment Safety

  • You never need to enter your PIN to RECEIVE money — only to SEND.
  • If someone sends a "collect request" — that is asking you to pay them, not the other way around.
  • Never scan a QR code someone sends you unless you personally know them.
