Cyber Safety for Senior Citizens
Simple, clear guidance to protect yourself from the most common digital scams targeting older adults.
Remember These 3 Golden Rules
- 🛑 Never share your OTP — Not with your bank, not with anyone.
- 🛑 Never pay to receive money — If someone says you've won a prize but must pay first, it's a scam.
- 🛑 No government official will call and demand immediate payment — Hang up and call a trusted family member.
Common Scams Targeting Senior Citizens
- KYC Update Scam — Fake calls claiming your bank account will be frozen unless you update KYC by sharing OTP.
- Digital Arrest — Caller pretends to be CBI/Police, claims your Aadhaar is linked to crime, demands money.
- Pension/Insurance Fraud — Fraudsters pose as government agents offering fake pension upgrades.
- Grandchild Scam — Caller claims to be your grandchild in trouble needing money urgently.
- Lottery / Prize Scam — A message or call saying you won ₹5 lakh. They ask for a small "processing fee" first.
- Fake Technical Support — Someone calls saying your computer or phone has a virus and asks to install an app to "fix" it — which steals your data.
What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call
- Hang up immediately without pressing any buttons.

UPI & Digital Payment Safety
- You never need to enter your PIN to RECEIVE money — only to SEND.
- If someone sends a "collect request" — that is asking you to pay them, not the other way around.
- Never scan a QR code someone sends you unless you personally know them.
